Setting up your UI-View in New Zealand

- some tips

In New Zealand, it is best to set your UI-View with maximum "UI-View" flavour, rather that the "APRS" flavour that probably suits many other parts of the world, where the majority of operators use APRS derived software.

This page sets out the most important configurable options that need to be set before you start using UI-View, with a particular emphasis on New Zealand operations.

Note that these are only suggestions - Amateur Radio is a hobby of experimentation, so you are encouraged to try other settings, and let me know if they perform better.

This page includes a number of thumbnails of the set-up screens- click on them for a more detailed picture, a new window will open to display the screen shot.  Note I have used high compression on the screen shots, to improve your viewing speed, with some loss of clarity - but they should be adequate.

You need to install the programme, then select setup to configure your station:

Comms Setup

You will need to select the correct comm port and baud rate for your TNC.  If your TNC is capable of KISS mode, this is best, otherwise select Host mode to NONE.

If you are using Baycom a modem, or multiple modems, you will need to install AGW Packet Engine also.   Click here for a separate page on setting up AGW.

Station Setup

In Station Setup you should ensure "UI-View Tag" is ticked, and use the default "APRS" as your unproto address for a start.  The best unproto address depends on your location in the rather varied packet network we have in New Zealand.  See the information in separate pages on activity in New Zealand and on Recommended Unproto Settings for some suggestions.

You need enter your callsign, and perhaps a beacon comment (this is read by others when they click on your icon and display your details).  If you do not know your location lat. and long., load a local map, and move the cursor to your location, then read the co-ordinates from the bottom right corner of the UI-View display.

A fixed beacon interval of 30 mins is a good start, and unless you intend to operate mobile, no entry is needed in the mobile beacon fields.  The Internet beacon is only needed if you plan to connect to an APRS server, and an interval of 10 mins is reasonable.

APRS Compatiblity

In APRS Compatibility you need to untick the "Default message type..." and tick the "enable UI-View extensions.."

Miscellaneous

In Miscellaneous, you should have "UI-View default" ticked.  It is a good idea to have "Refresh Preference" on Timer 1 minute, this reduces stress on your processor.  Most other settings do not matter a lot for first operation.

Station Info

You should put some details in your Station Information form.  This is read by others when they send a "query" to your station.
